Hadi Rani Ki Bawri

The valor of Rajput kings is paralleled with the stories of brave Rajput queens of this land which formed background of many buildings. Hadi Rani ki Bawri or step well also carries a legendary story of sacrifice, a king, a queen and their love to their customs and motherland. This is a beautiful step well situated at Toda Rai Singh at Tonk City in the state of Rajasthan.
Story behind the stones
The queen named Hadi Rani born in Hada clan and was married to King Chundavat of Salumbar in Mewar area. She had sacrificed her life just for the love to the motherland and inspired her husband to follow the Rajput tradition. As per the legend the Mughal King Aurangzeb had invaded Mewar and to protect the land the king of Mewar had invited all the kings to the battle. But King Chundavat was just married and hence a bit hesitant. He asked her beloved queen to provide a memento to him that can make him remember the queen. Understanding the mental state of the king, Hadi Rani though that her love is an obstacle on the path that King must follow to save the land and hence she severed her head and sent it to King. Seeing the head of the queen the king was stunned but controlled himself and went to the battlefield with the head of her queen. He fought fiercely and drove the enemies away but when the war was over denied to go back as his queen was not there and he cut his head on the battlefield only. In the memory of this brave queen, the step well was built and was given the name of her to make the incident legendary.
The step well is divided into two parts; one is theinternal area from where the water receded into the well, and the other is steps from where one can enter the well and reach the water and quench his thirst. There are numerous temples also in the well and many other significant historical buildings nearby the step well.
Though there are numerous architectural buildings with great history and culture at this location, due to less popularity and promotion among tourists this beautiful destination is not much in the limelight.
The step well is a distinct architectural structure which was very much practiced in past in India. However, there are only a few of them left now. They are also called as bawri or vav in the local language that can help one to reach to the bottom and drink water without the help of any tool or equipment. One can reach Toda Rai Singh easily as it is near the capital city Jaipur. For the lovers of History and Architecture, it is must to visit the place.
