Moti Magri – The Memorial Monument

Are you a historian? Interested in visiting places of historical significance? Wish to cite an embodiment of courage and faith? Or desire sightseeing Udaipur? You wouldn’t like to miss this out then. Moti Magri – the monument built in the memorial of the renowned of Rajput Heroes, Maharana Pratap and his dearest companion, Chetak, the horse.

Moti Magri is just a few kilometers away from the Udaipur City and is easily accessible through roads with the help of local cabs, buses and auto-rickshaws. Also, there is a separate array of stairs for those who are interested in mounting the hillock by stairs, enjoying the lovely atmosphere.
‘Moti’, in Hindi, means Pearl –‘t’ to be pronounced as in ‘tea’, and ‘Magri’ means Mount. Hence, if translated, Moti Magri means the Pearl Mount. This mount is called so as this has been among the few prosperous as well as the most sought-after places in and around the State of Rajasthan. The construction of this Memorial Mount was initiated by Maharana Bhagwat Singh of Mewar, who is also a successor of Maharana Pratap.

Moti Magri is a small hillock atop which stands a smarak, a gallant and heroic life-size statue of the most influential ruler of Rajput, Maharana Pratap. The statue has been built as an honour to the bravery and courage of the Maharana and the never-fading faith of his favourite horse, Chetak. The image of the statue is built depicting the commemoration of the famous Battle of Haldighati.
In the Battle of Haldighati, The Maharana, with his spirited Rajput army, defied the humongous Mughal army of Emperor Akbar led by Man Singh I. The hillside battle field proved advantageous to the Rajputs in enthralling the heavily armour-laiden mughal horses. Maharana Pratap utilized this added-up value to gain the upper hand. Yet, once when he was in deep trouble amidst the mughal warriors, it was the protective Chetak that came to his rescue risking its own life. Chetak stood by its master in his hardest of times in war, unmindful of its own pathetic condition. The master devoted himself to his state, and his mount gave it all to its master, both daring their breath against all odds. The bronze statue of Maharana Pratap mounted in his loyal companion is a befitting honour both of them deserve, even if not more.

If this statue is a treat to our heart, its atmosphere is a treat to our eyes. The statue itself is in a position overlooking the Fateh Sagar Lake, an artificial yet wonderful lake designed and constructed by Maharana Fateh Singh. The cool breeze, after embracing the waters of the Lake, carries the blossoms from the small but beautiful garden that lies nearby. Just about a twenty minutes walk along the hillside, to the top of the mount, will lead us to the Hall of Heroes, a museum which has in store twenty large paintings depicting the Mewar history, and models of Chittorgarh and Haldighati battlefields. Altogether, Moti Magri is a delightful place to visit and brush up our knowledge on history and the sense of appreciating beauty.
