Jaigarh Fort – Majestic fort of Jaipur

Jaigarh Fort 

The amazing fort of Jaigarh is located on the peak of Aravalli Hills known as the Hill of Eagles or Cheel Ka Teela. It is built 400 m above Amber Fort. You can get the complete panoramic view of the Aravalli mountain range and the city from this place. The fort was built by Sawan Jai Singh II in the year 1726 in order to offer protection to the Palace Complex and the Amber Fort.

Architecturally, it is similar to the Amber Fort and contains many interesting historical items within the complex. It houses the world’s largest cannon on wheels, and the Jaigarh museum displays different gears and weapons used in wars. It is also famous for the treasure that was hidden under the fort and as per sources, it was seized by the State Government during the 1970s. The huge fort that spans over a length of more than 3 km is made of red sandstone. Impressive garden within the complex offers cooling ambiance.

Cannon Foundry:

This region was rich in iron ore mines, and it became famous for cannon foundries. Jaigarh Fort had a huge wind tunnel that was able to create temperatures as high as 2400 degree by sucking air from the high mountains and moving it into the furnace. This used to melt the metals easily which was used to mould the cannons, some of which were as long as 16 feet. The world’s largest cannon on wheels known as Jaivana is housed in the fort that weighs about 50 tons. It is also said that the cannon was only test fired once in its lifetime and was never used in any battle. It was charged with 100 kgs of gunpowder and covered a distance of nearly 35 kilometres in the test fire.

The weapons used to be stored at Vijay Garh during the Rajput period. The place is a must visit for history enthusiasts, and you will be surprised to know about the amazing technology used for weapons during that period.

Museum:

Jaigarh Museum has some of the most amazing collection of coins and various artworks belonging to the Rajput Empire. It is open for public viewing, and you will have a fun time visiting this museum.

Other than these historical elements, the Jaigarh Fort has religious aspect too. It is also well known for its Ram Harihar Temple and the Kal Bhairav Temple. While the Ram Harihar Temple was built during the 10th century, the Kal Bhairav Temple was built during the 12th century. Even to this day, you can find the temple intact, and many people visit this place.

Other than this, you can also enjoy the beautiful view of the Sagar Lake at this fort. The Rajputs had very friendly relation with the Mughal Kingdom and the city never faced any hard time due to enemies. It is for this reason that you can still find the fort in very good condition as it did not get damaged during wars. You can visit this fort at any time during the day.
