Jag Mandir or Lake Garden Palace is unlike any other palace and is located on a beautiful island of Lake Pichola in Udaipur. The only way to reach this palace is by boat. The beautiful three-storied palace is made of marble and yellow sandstone. It was built during the 17th century by Maharana Karan Singh. Actually, the three Maharanas of Sisodiya Rajput, Maharana Amar Singh who initiated the construction, continued by Maharana Karan Singh and finished by Maharana Jagat Singh, were given credit for this emblematic structure.
Legend behind Jag Mandir Palace:
Interestingly, this palace was not built for the local kingdom and was instead built to provide a hideout place to Shah Jahan, who was known as Prince Khurram at that time. It is said that Khurram had revolted against his father and was looking to hide somewhere till he gets to the throne. It is also said that Maharana Karan Singh agreed to help Khurram as his mother was a Rajput. It is also believed that the Taj Mahal was inspired by this palace and Shah Jahan imbibed the pieta dura work of this place during the construction of Taj Mahal. Jagat Mandir also has the history of serving as a safe home for many European families during the 1857 revolt.
Specialities of Jag Mandir:
The prime attraction of this awesome palace is the Gul Mahal, which was the prime in structure of Jag Mandir. Built in 1551 by Maharana Amar Singh in Islamic style of architecture was develope d by Maharana Jagat Singh for Prince Khurram. The columned hall leads to three domed beautiful courtyard. The courtyard walls are laden with precious and semi-precious gems inlay marble tiles. The courtyard is built in black and white tiles. Other than that the Bara Pattharon ka Mahal, which is made up of Twelve Solid Marble Slabs, is yet another popular attraction. While the Zeenat Mahal served as the abode of ladies from the royal family, the Kunwar Pada ka Mahal was built for the crowned prince. The palace is built using a combination of Rajput style and Islamic architecture.
How to reach Jag Mandir?
Jag Mandir is built on an island, and the only way to reach it is by taking a boat ride from Fateh Palace or the Bansi Ghat Jetty. The rides are very frequent, and you can get a boat every one hour from this place. This ride takes about an hour, and you can see the palace from all sides.
