Located in Amer town, about 11 kilometres from Jaipur is the beautiful Amer Fort, also known as Amber Fort. It is a huge fort built on a hill with an area spanning nearly 4 square kilometres. This artistic fort constructed with red sandstone and marble is the prime tourist attraction in Jaipur for travel enthusiasts. Every day thousands of visitors come to the place all through the year. The Amber Fort, Jewel of Rajasthan, was built by Kacchwaha Rajput king, Raja Maan Singh I during the 16th century which a blend of Hindu and Rajput architectural styles. It embraces many structures and the prominent among them are the Diwan e Aam and Diwan e Khas where the King used to meet the general public and special guests respectively. Diwan e Aam is a three side open hall with ornamented pillars. The glass mosaic of Diwan e Khas attracts with its delicate beauty. Opposite to Diwan e Khas is the Sukh Niwas, which has doors made of sandalwood and ivory. You will be astonished to know that there is a channel that carries cool water through the hall which keeps the room cool all the time. Another famous attraction of this place is the Sheesh Mahal also known as the Mirror Palace, which has beautiful paintings and glasses covering walls and ceilings. It is said that if you just light two candles in this room, the reflection converts this into thousands of twinkles like stars.
Elephant ride at Amber Fort:
Tourists can walk through the hill using the cobbled ramp to go to the palace or for full enjoyment take the elephant ride in courtyards. The festooned elephants are lovely to witness. The heads of elephants are decorated with heavy jewellery and they are draped in colourful clothes. Explore the palace, take the elephant ferry. Elephants are well trained to handle tourists and are very friendly. About four people can sit on the cushion arrangement on elephant back so that the tourists can sit easily and comfortably without any problem. The elephant ride for two people will cost about Rs. 900 and it will be a memorable experience for your family.
The fort is open for visitors from 8 A.M. in the morning to about 6 P.M. After getting into the palace, you can watch the light show in the evening which begins at around 7.30 p.m. There is an entry fee for this show and you can get tickets at the entrance of the palace.
The beauty of this Fort is enhanced by the surrounding Maota Lake. You can seek blessings at nearby Sheetla Mata Temple.
