Gulab Bagh

Gulab Bagh is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Udaipur. It is also the largest garden of this region which is spread across 100 acres and also has a zoo inside the garden. It is called Gulab Bagh due to the wide cover with variety of roses available in this garden. Gulab is a Hindi word for Rose and Bagh means Garden. The zoo inside Gulab Bagh is one of the oldest zoos in the country which is indeed thrilling for kids. It is also known as Sajjan Niwas Garden.

The History:

This garden was started in 1878 by Maharana Sajjan Singh, and the work continued till 1920. During this period, numerous varieties of medicinal plants and trees were planted under the supervision of noted horticulturist from Madras, TH Story. The authorities took great care to plant a variety of trees including mangoes, grapes, guava, lemon, pomegranate, sapota, banana, tamarind and many others. Apart from that, it had many varieties of rose plants and became very famous for its collection and got its name Gulab Bagh. Along with this amazing garden, this region also has a huge library called Saraswati Bhawan Library which was earlier called Victoria Museum. It was the home to many rare stone manuscripts and artefacts that date back to 3rd Century BC.

The Zoo:

The Gulab Bagh also has a zoo inside, and it is very famous for being one of the oldest in the entire country. During the time of Maharana Fateh Singh, fights were organized between Lions, Tigers and other wild animals which served as entertainment for the people. The Zoo had some rare species of wild animals and many other animals including Black Leopards, Zebras, Rhinos, and Ostriches. The toy train that takes you on a ride through the garden will be enjoyed immensely by your kids. There is a small entry fee for the place, and you will be charged Rs. 25 for the Gulab Bagh entry while for the Zoo, the charges are about Rs. 5. If you have a camera with you, you will be charged Rs. 15 extra which is worth for the value the views you would capture here. If you are visiting the garden, be prepared to walk for long distance through the extensive spread as vehicles are not allowed inside the garden.

How to reach Gulab Bagh and Zoo?

You can hire a cab from the city bus stand to Gulab Bagh, which will cost you about Rs. 250 or may hire some cab. If you take an auto or tuk-tuk, it will be about Rs. 100. It is centrally located, and you can easily reach this place from the city center in about 10 minutes.

With so many attractions packed into one single place, the Gulab Bagh is the ideal place for you to have some best moments with your entire family. Your kids will enjoy the visit to the zoo and do not forget to take the toy train ride in the garden. You can capture the beauty of this garden with your camera and share it with your friends.

by road connectivity: udaipur is connected to rest of the country through 3 national highways i.e NH8, NH48 , NH27 and apart from state transport buses there are a lot of private bus operators who connect udaipur to rest of the country and the kind of buses range from regular buses to sleeper coaches and Volvo bus service which is also operated by rajsthan state transport.
