Forts and Palaces in Udaipur hold immense flavour of Mewar dynasty. Located in the outskirts of city Sajjan Garh is a Palace conceptualized by Maharana SajjanSingh. This lavish abode was constructed atop on the Bansdara peak of Aravalli hills which is erected at an altitude of 3100 feet above the sea level. This gives a magnificent view of sunset from there. The perching palace overlooks the Fateh Sagar & Pichhola Lakes, palaces and the beauty of greenery. It is also known as Monsoon Palace as it was believed that the palace was used to view the clouds from the pinnacle of the palace.
This fortress built in 19th century was constructed in Rajput Architectural style. Featured marble edifice depicted as home in exile for Kamal Khan, an Afghan Prince in the James Bond film Octopussy is Udaipur’s Sajjan Garh. It was seen along with Pichola Lake in the movie. A ‘tiger’ hunt sequence include escape of 007 into the jungle and battle in the courtyard was shot here.
The construction began in 1884 during the regin of Maharana Sajjan Singh. Any traveller would be overwhelmed by the natural backdrop. Since it is located on the hill top it gives a mind blowing view of the passing clouds and at the same time it will provide jobs for lots of people. But unfortunately, Maharana met with an untimely death and the work was paused for some time. After the succession of Maharana Fatheh Singh, he continued the work and it was soon fully constructed structure. It was like keeping the head between the clouds and watching the dazzling clouds by footing on the structure.
This building is made of white marble and has many high towers which are highly protected by the guards. It is an eye- catching sight at night because it is illuminated and decorated during the evenings. Exquisite carved leaves and flowers on pillars and lime plastered walls turns golden under artificial lights in darkness of evening. The fountains and the domes found in this building gives a heavenly appearance to it. Jharokhas in rooms and grand central court adds to the mesmerizing beauty.
There are other places of attractions in the vicinity of this palace. One among these is Sajjangarh Wild Life Sanctuary. This sanctuary established in 1987 is a dense forest which was used as a shooting spot by the rulers of Rajasthan. But now it is a well maintained and highly protected wildlife sanctuary. It is now home to a lot of wild animals like boar, Sambar deer, reptiles, etc. The bird watchers can have a whale of a time by visiting this sanctuary. This sanctuary is stretched over an area of 2 square miles.
This historical building is now secured under the Forest Department of the Government of Rajasthan. The Palace with sanctuary surrounding it gives a very good sightseeing experience to the travellers. These two places of attractions are accessible by road and air and is well connected to all parts of India.
